DeWaay, a Minneapolis pastor and radio host, has zeroed in on the real mission of Rick Warren and the “Purpose Driven” agenda. He has exposed that franchising movement for what it actually is—an all-out effort to redefine American Christianity. We fully understand the need of Christianity to come more into line with Apostolic principles, doctrinally and otherwise, but the consortium of Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Brian McLaren, Doug Pagit, et al., are pushing stuff you wouldn’t want your people exposed to. Warren gets a foot in the door with the innocent sounding Purpose Driven Church/Life and then feeds his scripture-twisting philosophies into those who plug into to his franchise. Wearing his trademark Hawaiian sport shirts, he pushes New Age and Eastern religious ideas while reassuring you that he is orthodox in his beliefs. Warren strips the heart out of key doctrines, accessorizes them with human wisdom, making Christianity a journey of “self-discovery” (a la Buddhism), and passes it all off as Christianity. His focus is more on each individual attempting to discover his purpose of earth rather than God’s purpose. His plan changes the worship, the belief system, the practice of prayer, the church culture, and facilities—virtually everything. Growth is everything. If you are not growing by leaps and bounds by operating according to his agenda, you are nothing more than a failure.
Truth is not the object. The Bible seems to be used to serve his purpose, not a book of principles to which we should all conform. It is time we Pentecostals recognized where he is going and got off that apostasy-bound train. DeWaay’s book lays it out with facts and quotes, but does it kindly. It is an eye-opener.
